The Secret of Mantra
How and why would we want to practice mantra?
Mantra translates to mind (man) – vehicle (tra) in English and points to the purpose of mantra to “steady the fluctuations of the mind” Or, as we would say in contemporary language, to calm racing, anxious thoughts and direct our mind toward greater balance and well being. But to just understand this purpose from our intellect alone, does little to reveal mantra’s subtle power. For that level of understanding we need to directly experience mantra for ourselves.

With this in mind, seasoned yoga teacher and facilitator, Odette Slater created, The Secret of Mantra, an experiential introduction into the practice and application of mantra. Where, over a 6 week period, we come together to explore, exactly the question above and come to understand the purpose ourselves, directly.
Each class, we will begin with a brief context setting discussion about mantra practice and “Iti Hasa”, or the history of pre-colonized India and together build a container for approaching the depths of Yoga Philosophy. Then, after a warm up and simple practice to free the voice, we will learn a new (to you) Sanskrit mantra and chant it 108 times – enabling us to directly experience how chanting and repeating mantra (mind-vehicle) might benefit our lives. We will also learn a simple, traditional technique to help you count mantras as you chant them.
As a side note, you’ll be pleased to know that if you come to Odette’s weekly yoga classes at Green Room, as you complete this course you will be able to chant along with her in the opening and closing mantras!
